Biography

About Matthias Hübner

Hübner was recognized early on as an exceptional talent: in 1989 he won the GDR youth painting competition (JugendMalwettbewerb der DDR), and in 1993 the European painting competition of the Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken. After years as a musician and producer, he returned to painting with great passion in 2020 and has since continued to develop his unmistakable, curious and experimental visual language.

In 2025, Galerie TscharT in Leipzig presented “farbTON,” his first major solo exhibition. In the same year he received four international awards, including finalist awards from the Teravarna International Juried Art Competition and ARTAVITA “Artist of the Year 2025,” as well as a certificate of merit from La Pinacothèque – Musée privé au Luxembourg as part of the Luxembourg Art Prize 2025.

His work “Golden Age” has been added to the collection of the Kunstverein Schloss Gleina, where it is on permanent view. The trilogy “BRUCH” was selected by the Saxony-Anhalt police as a long-term loan and installed in the office of the victim protection officer in Weißenfels.

In 2026 and 2027, exhibitions and presentations take him to Málaga, the Cosy Festival at Schloss Dornburg on the Elbe, Stuttgart, Rome, Madrid and Prague, among other places. A solo exhibition at the Innenhofgalerie Bergmannstrost in Halle (Saale) is also planned for 2027.

Matthias Hübner’s art thrives on contrast, emotion and openness. His paintings are not meant to be read in one way; they invite viewers to discover their own stories and meanings between light and shadow, stillness and energy.

Matthias Hübner is represented by Favori Media.

Painting Between Figure, Color and the Present

Matthias Hübner’s painting begins with the figure but never stops at its outward appearance. Faces, bodies and postures become carriers of experience: of what moves, what presses inward, and what shapes us in a present defined by images, expectations and attributions.

His unmistakable visual language arises from combining precisely modeled, often monochrome figuration with intense interventions of color. Neon pink, turquoise or orange are not decorative accents. They mark energy, breaks, and inner as well as outer stimuli. Under UV light, further layers emerge in selected works and change how the picture is perceived once again.

The works cannot be reduced to a single theme. They unfold in three groups of works that open different approaches while remaining connected.

Body and Resonance

Movement, gesture and color as visible energy

In this group of works, the body becomes an instrument. Matthias Hübner does not paint sequences of movement but the force that sets a movement off: the moment a figure steps beyond its familiar order. The backbend in “Tanz,” the open arms in “Ton,” the hand about to strike in “Farbstrich Anfang”: it is always the gesture that organizes the pictorial space.

Inner States

Between exhaustion, resistance and composure

This group gathers works that look inward. Hübner’s figures withdraw, pause or set out. “December” and “Fertig” know exhaustion without confusing it with failure. “Neon Scream” takes loss of control to the point where new clarity can emerge.

Identity and the Present

Between origin, digitalization and protest

Here the figure meets the signs of its time. Headscarf and headphones in “Generation,” nun’s wimple and tongue piercing in “Religion 2.0,” mask and cape in “Helden”: Hübner presents belonging not as an explanation but as a stance. Tradition does not disappear in these pictures; it is recoded.
