Visual Description
A monochrome figure of an older man sitting on a concrete ledge and gazing into the space. On the right, gray wall textures; on the left, an urban field of color in blue, green and pink with gestural lettering (“STOP,” “WAR,” “TIME…”). On the ground, an intensely magenta rectangle glows like a carpet. Soft grays, bold cropping and spraying gestures of color.
Artistic Interpretation
“Ruhe” (German for “calm”) shows a pause amid the noise of the world: a contemplative posture against pulsing graffiti messages. The work addresses time, peace and the present—color as an echo of the street, the figure as a still center. Between social urgency and personal stillness, a picture emerges about dignity, mindfulness and attitude.
Art-Historical Context
A dialogue between figurative painting and urban visual language: monochrome portrait modeling meets street-art gestures and typographic marks. The combination of photographic cropping, lettering and color field places the work between New Figuration, Pop aesthetics and contemporary urban art.
Exclusivity
A one-of-a-kind work with a distinctive signature style: a precise black-and-white figure, typographic layers of color and the magenta floor field as a visual anchor. High recognition value within Hübner’s dialogue between monochrome and color.
Collector Value
A statement piece that reads strongly from a distance and has social resonance. A compelling choice for central placements in galleries, cultural venues and reception areas, as well as private collections that position figuration in dialogue with urban art.
More About the Artist
Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast black and white with neon/UV color in modern surrealistic realism; people, emotions and open interpretations are at the center, and since 2020 he has been working experimentally again. Early prizes (GDR 1989, Europe 1993) and his selection as a 2025 Teravarna finalist mark his development.
