Visual Description
The work shows a single human figure in a floating, backward-leaning pose. The body is finely modeled, almost sculptural, while the background is dominated by powerful fields of color. An intense red encloses the left side of the picture like an energetic wave that flows into a wide turquoise. Vertical green traces run through the space and recall vibrations or lines of sound.
The figure seems detached from the ground, between ascent and surrender. Arms and hands are open, the head is tilted back, and the body seems to entrust itself to the space. Color and form are in a tense dialogue between control and dissolution.
Artistic Interpretation
“Ton” (German for “sound” or “tone”) is a picture about resonance. Matthias Hübner translates sound into physicality and color. The figure seems not to be dancing but listening—or to be sound itself. The body becomes a resonant space that takes in vibrations and carries them on.
The red acts like an impulse, a trigger, while the turquoise symbolizes expanse, breath and reverberation. The green lines read like visual frequencies running through the space. Movement arises not from action but from reaction: from giving oneself over to an inner or outer tone.
Art-Historical Context
Formally, the work moves between figurative painting, references to expressive dance and expressive color-field painting. The combination of clear figuration and an atmospheric ground of color connects to modern pictorial traditions in which the human body is understood as a carrier of immaterial states—sound, emotion, energy.
In content, “Ton” stands in a line of contemporary works that understand perception synesthetically: seeing, hearing and feeling intertwine into an expanded visual language.
Exclusivity
Matthias Hübner’s signature style shows here in the precise balance between figurative clarity and painterly freedom. The figure remains legible while the space around it exceeds it. Color is not decoration but a carrier of meaning.
“Ton” is a work of great inner tension that resists a single interpretation. Its strength lies in this openness—and in its physically palpable energy.
Collector Value
This work unfolds its effect especially in spaces that allow for openness and movement. Thanks to its portrait format and intense color, it has a strong presence without dominating. In private collections it feels inspiring and sensual; in institutional settings it opens up conversations about perception, the body and sound.
“Ton” lingers in the room like a reverberation—visible, tangible, lasting.
More About the Artist
Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast black and white with neon/UV color in modern surrealistic realism; people, emotions and open interpretations are at the center, and since 2020 he has been working experimentally again. Early prizes (GDR 1989, Europe 1993) and his selection as a 2025 Teravarna finalist mark his development.
