Visual Description
A close, monochrome portrait: an older man wearing a ring holds his hand to his forehead. A horizontal neon-yellow band of color runs across his eyes and hand, with fine drips running downward. Dense black areas, precise gradations of gray and hard edges of light—set against a deep, dark ground.
Artistic Interpretation
“Alter Mann” explores memory, burden and clarity. The gesture, somewhere between shielding and focusing, meets the yellow band as a signal of insight, pain or warning. The work captures a moment of self-questioning—quiet, concentrated, unvarnished.
Art-Historical Context
New Figuration in rigorous black-and-white modeling meets pop-inflected neon accents and a street-art feel (dripping). The bold partial covering of the eyes creates a contemporary iconography between realism, Pop and urban painting.
Exclusivity
A one-of-a-kind work with a clear signature style: sculptural grayscale, a neon-yellow horizontal band with drip marks and strong chiaroscuro. The compact portrait format (70 × 50 cm) offers strong presence and recognition value.
Collector Value
A statement piece with intense psychological impact that reads from a distance—well suited to central placements in galleries, practices and reception areas, and to collections focused on Hübner’s dialogue between monochrome and neon.
More About the Artist
Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast black and white with neon/UV color in modern surrealistic realism; people, emotions and open interpretations are at the center, and since 2020 he has been working experimentally again. Early prizes (GDR 1989, Europe 1993) and his selection as a 2025 Teravarna finalist mark his development.
