Visual Description
A frontal, half-length portrait in monochrome: on the left, a calmly modeled figure; on the right, the face dissolves into small gray squares that drift like a stream of pixels across a bright red field. Precise contours, soft gray tones and a bold contrast of black, white and red.
Artistic Interpretation
“Digital” explores identity in an age of fragmentation. Between physical presence and a disintegrating grid, a field of tension emerges around self-image, control and visibility. The red field acts as both stage and warning signal—a picture about closeness, distance and becoming in the digital world.
Art-Historical Context
The combination of New Figuration and modular grids draws on Pop aesthetics, Op Art and pixel logic, and post-digital painting. The bold color is balanced by finely graded portrait modeling—a clearly contemporary dialogue between surface and depth.
Exclusivity
A one-of-a-kind work with an iconic division: classical portrait painting versus pixel-like fragmentation on an intensely red ground. Hübner’s signature style—monochrome figuration plus a selective field of color—is instantly recognizable and works powerfully in an exhibition setting.
Collector Value
A statement piece that reads from a distance and has curatorial clarity. Well suited to central placements in galleries, educational settings and reception areas, and to collections focused on digital image culture or expanding Hübner’s dialogue between monochrome and color.
More About the Artist
Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast black and white with neon/UV color in modern surrealistic realism; people, emotions and open interpretations are at the center, and since 2020 he has been working experimentally again. Early prizes (GDR 1989, Europe 1993) and his selection as a 2025 Teravarna finalist mark his development.
