Visual Description
The work shows two childlike figures on a wide, empty road. The scene is kept in a reduced, almost monochrome grayscale, from which a bright pink rectangle in the background stands out radically. This intense field of color drips downward and reads like an open surface, a window or an emotional explosion in the picture space.
The figures wear masks and capes—fragile references to superheroes. One stands on a massive, block-like object; the other seems to be in motion, almost fleeing. The landscape is bleak: bare trees, dark clouds, a horizon without shelter. Everything feels exposed, raw and unvarnished.
Artistic Interpretation
“Helden” (German for “heroes”) is not a picture about strength but about vulnerability dressed up as strength. Matthias Hübner uses the iconography of children’s hero fantasies to describe an existential state: the attempt to hold one’s own in a world that seems too big, too empty or too threatening.
The masks do not protect; they mark distance. The capes are not signs of power but fragile projections of hope. The glowing pink in the background reads like an inner state—an emotional outburst that cannot be controlled but becomes visible, dripping, inescapable.
Art-Historical Context
Formally, the work moves between figurative painting, contemporary realism and symbolic heightening. The deliberately reduced palette recalls positions of New Figuration, while the expressive field of color in the background forms an emotional, almost abstract counterforce.
Thematically, “Helden” belongs to a contemporary visual language that does not romanticize childhood but understands it as a place of early confrontation with fear, responsibility and self-assertion. The hero figure is demythologized and psychologically charged.
Exclusivity
Matthias Hübner’s signature style is defined by clear composition, narrative openness and emotional intensification. His figures seem lifted out of a story whose beginning and end remain unknown. The viewer is not guided but confronted.
“Helden” is a work that resists a single reading. Its strength lies in the tension between childlike symbolism and existential weight.
Collector Value
This work unfolds its effect especially in contexts concerned with identity, vulnerability and social roles. In private collections it feels intense and emotional; in institutional spaces it opens up conversations about childhood, projection and inner strength.
“Helden” stays present in the room—not through volume, but through inner tension.
More About the Artist
Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast black and white with neon/UV color in modern surrealistic realism; people, emotions and open interpretations are at the center, and since 2020 he has been working experimentally again. Early prizes (GDR 1989, Europe 1993) and his selection as a 2025 Teravarna finalist mark his development.
