Visual Description

A precise black-and-white portrait in the foreground—softly modulated skin tones, clear contours, a calm gaze. Above it lie large, luminous bursts of color in reds, oranges and greens, with spontaneous splatters and sweeping lines. The headphones add a cool, contemporary accent; the calm gray of the figure meets a vibrating, almost neon setting.

Artistic Interpretation

“Generation” stages concentration and self-determination in the midst of a loud present. The headscarf and headphones connect intimacy and public life: a protected space and a soundscape. Between stillness (monochrome) and impulse (an explosion of color), a picture emerges about belonging, identity and the moment in which a new generation finds its own rhythm.

Art-Historical Context

The high-contrast juxtaposition of monochrome figuration and an intensely colored, gestural surface connects to contemporary portrait painting at the intersection of Pop aesthetics, urban and street art, and New Figuration. The clear reduction of the face recalls bold realism, while the dynamic background painting quotes the language of urban visual space.

Exclusivity

A one-of-a-kind work in a large format (120 × 100 cm) with the juxtaposition of monochrome figuration and an intensely colored, gestural surface that is characteristic of Hübner. The precise, calm portrait drawing—accented by the headscarf and headphones as contemporary signatures—meets dynamic flows of color and line. This field of tension defines Hübner’s unmistakable signature style and gives the work a strong presence.

Collector Value

An iconic statement piece about identity, belonging and self-determination—thematically lasting and curatorially versatile. Its clear frontality and strong impact from a distance make the work ideal for central placements in reception and educational spaces, as well as private collections in which art is meant to convey clarity, dignity and contemporary radiance. The striking combination of a black-and-white figure and a vibrating field of color also strengthens its recognition value within the artist’s oeuvre.

More About the Artist

Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast black and white with neon/UV color in modern surrealistic realism; people, emotions and open interpretations are at the center, and since 2020 he has been working experimentally again. Early prizes (GDR 1989, Europe 1993) and his selection as a 2025 Teravarna finalist mark his development.
