Visual Description
In a vertical format, a slender white lantern with a funnel-shaped shade stands at the center against a light, warmly toned sky with a few clouds. Behind it lie a low parapet, a bollard and the empty beach, with a dark strip of land on the horizon. The plank floor in the foreground and the edges of the picture fade into blur.
Artistic Interpretation
The picture turns an everyday object into a figure: the lantern stands like a person by the sea, upright and alone. The blur gives it a quality of memory, as if the place were seen in hindsight. It does not tell of the beach, but of waiting for light.
Art-Historical Context
The soft, toned black-and-white photograph stands in the tradition of Pictorialism and, in contemporary terms, close to Michael Kenna’s pictures of coasts and piers. The strict central axis gives the picture an almost icon-like calm.
Exclusivity
The only vertical work of the series in this selection and the one with the softest tone: precision in the motif, softness at the edges. The photograph bears the artist’s signature.
Collector Value
A standalone piece for hallways, stairwells, living rooms and libraries. The narrow vertical format fits into alcoves and beside windows and doors.
More About the Artist
Olli Boehm combines digital photography with mixed-media interventions to create layered pictorial spaces in which reality, memory and atmosphere interlock. His works condense urban and human situations into visual metaphors—between blur, texture and precise composition.
With pure photography, as in the series “A day at the sea” and in his street pictures, he shows the clear, reduced side of this approach.
