Visual Description

On the open deck of a ferry, white benches stand in a loose row, their shadows falling on the pale green floor. Behind them, a narrow railing draws a fine line, and the sea breaks up into silvery shimmer against the light. The sky turns almost seamlessly into white; flat island contours are suggested on the horizon. There are no people in sight.

Artistic Interpretation

The picture shows the moment before the day by the sea: the crossing, when there is nothing to do but look. The empty seats feel like an invitation and at the same time like an afterimage of the people who are just not there. The strong brightening is an attitude here, not a flaw: the light dissolves things until only rhythm, surface and calm remain.

Art-Historical Context

The reduction to horizon, light and emptiness is close to Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Seascapes. The clear row of benches recalls the objective photography of the twentieth century. Unlike Sugimoto, however, a human scale remains: seats waiting for someone to arrive.

Exclusivity

A picture made almost entirely of whites, silvers and pale greens, yet with depth: the railing and the shadows of the benches structure the space without closing it. It opens the series “A day at the sea” as a calm prelude.

Collector Value

A bright, calming work for spaces that need a sense of expanse: practices, waiting areas, spa and wellness areas, hotels, law firms and light-filled living spaces. Together with “Ferry, Lifebuoy,” it forms a natural pair.

More About the Artist

Olli Boehm combines digital photography with mixed-media interventions to create layered pictorial spaces in which reality, memory and atmosphere interlock. His works condense urban and human situations into visual metaphors—between blur, texture and precise composition.

With pure photography, as in the series “A day at the sea” and in his street pictures, he shows the clear, reduced side of this approach.
