Two Basket Chairs

Visual Description

In a bright, almost overexposed black-and-white picture, two white beach chairs stand on an empty beach; the left one is slightly open, and a person inside can only be guessed at. Two gulls cross the wide sky with its small, soft clouds. The sea glitters on the horizon, and the edges are gently darkened.

Artistic Interpretation

The two chairs look like a couple in conversation, while the birds above are movement within stillness. The picture has humor and tenderness: it shows how much company there is in things when people are barely visible.

Art-Historical Context

As a quiet counter-image to Martin Parr’s colorful, ironic beach scenes, Boehm relies on reduction, light and black and white. The observation of everyday life on the beach remains; the punch line becomes softer.

Exclusivity

In contrast to the darker skies of “Basket Chair,” this picture is light and airy. Together, the two works form a pair with different tonalities. The photograph bears the artist’s signature.

Collector Value

A light-filled motif for spaces with warmth and lightness: living and dining areas, practices, vacation apartments, hotels and cafés.

More About the Artist

Olli Boehm combines digital photography with mixed-media interventions to create layered pictorial spaces in which reality, memory and atmosphere interlock. His works condense urban and human situations into visual metaphors—between blur, texture and precise composition.

With pure photography, as in the series “A day at the sea” and in his street pictures, he shows the clear, reduced side of this approach.
