Visual Description
Seen from behind, four people lean against wooden railings at the end of a pier and look out at the water: two women on the left, a couple on the right, a round sign between them. Their shadows stretch as long, strict stripes across the planks into the foreground. The sky is darkly graded; on the horizon, a strip of coast with a few sails appears.
Artistic Interpretation
Everyone is looking in the same direction, but each group on its own. The picture is a quiet study of community side by side: the same sea, different thoughts. The shadows connect and separate at the same time, extending the bodies into the viewer’s space.
Art-Historical Context
The figures seen from behind refer to a pictorial tradition from Caspar David Friedrich to the present, transferred here into a photographic image of everyday life. The handling of hard light and long shadows recalls the street photography of Fan Ho.
Exclusivity
One of the most narratively dense pictures in the series: figures, railing lines and shadows form a fine grid in which each group has its place. The photograph bears the artist’s signature.
Collector Value
A motif that sparks conversation, for spaces where people come together: lounges, reception areas, conference rooms and restaurants. The figures seen from behind invite viewers to step into the picture themselves.
More About the Artist
Olli Boehm combines digital photography with mixed-media interventions to create layered pictorial spaces in which reality, memory and atmosphere interlock. His works condense urban and human situations into visual metaphors—between blur, texture and precise composition.
With pure photography, as in the series “A day at the sea” and in his street pictures, he shows the clear, reduced side of this approach.
