Visual Description

On a light, lavender-gray ground, Graf gathers numerous birds with black-and-white plumage: magpie, great spotted woodpecker, barn swallows at the nest, black-headed gull, ptarmigan, black grouse and more. Each bird stands in its own small habitat of branch, rock, snow or tree stump.

Artistic Interpretation

The picture follows a clear idea: it shows how differently nature works with just two colors. Contrast, markings and posture become the actual subject. The result is a calm, almost meditative picture about form and character.

Art-Historical Context

The composition draws on historical bird plates and sketchbooks in which naturalists recorded several species on a single sheet. Graf translates this tradition into a large oil painting of elegant restraint.

Exclusivity

A thematically coherent work in a 70 × 80 cm format. The consistent focus on black-and-white birds and the airy arrangement give it a special graphic clarity.

Collector Value

An elegant work for libraries, studies, country houses and collectors interested in natural history. In dialogue with “Vogelvielfalt,” it shows two contrasting ways of ordering the world of birds.
