Visual Description

A large, glowing white skull stands frontally against a black background on a marble slab. It holds a cigarette between its teeth, and one tooth is gold. In white lettering, the words “Art is not dead” and “Long live art?” frame the skull, with bottles and a cocktail glass in the background.

Artistic Interpretation

Graf takes up the vanitas motif and gives it an ironic twist: the skull, a symbol of transience, becomes a casual counterpart that asserts the vitality of art. The question mark after “Long live art” opens up space for doubt and humor.

Art-Historical Context

The work combines the Baroque tradition of the vanitas still life with the language of street and Pop Art. It shows a surprising, contemporary side of the realist Erich Graf.

Exclusivity

An 80 × 100 cm format in acrylic that stands clearly apart from Graf’s nature and animal paintings. The precise painting of the skull and the free lettering form a tense contrast.

Collector Value

A statement work for bars, lounges, agencies, studios and collectors with a sense of irony and an interest in vanitas motifs.
