Visual Description

A young woman with an artfully tied turban and large golden hoop earrings turns toward the viewer, her gaze calm and direct. Her face is finely modeled, while shoulder, garment and surroundings dissolve into powerful brushstrokes: red, yellow, green and violet swirl around the figure like feathers and lengths of fabric.

Artistic Interpretation

The title “Africa queen” refers not to a crown but to bearing. Dignity arises here from the gaze and the calm of the face amid a moving, almost stormy world of color. The picture celebrates beauty and self-determination without idealizing.

Art-Historical Context

The tension between a finely worked portrait and expressive, almost abstract surroundings stands in the tradition of Expressionism. At the same time, the work connects to contemporary portrait painting that confidently places Black women at the center of the picture.

Exclusivity

A one-of-a-kind work with great painterly energy: the shift from precise drawing in the face to broad, gestural bands of color is the signature of this picture. The color is intense and at the same time harmoniously composed.

Collector Value

A strong statement work for spaces with presence: foyers, offices, hotel lobbies and living spaces that are allowed to show personality. In its 80 × 100 cm format, it acts as an eye-catcher and develops particular strength in dialogue with “We will be free” and “African ethnies.”
