Blauhäher (Blue Jay)

Visual Description

A blue jay sits on a pine branch, surrounded by soft clusters of long pine needles. Behind it opens a tall rectangular picture field with a green landscape, set like a window into the pale background. The blue, white and black of the plumage are finely graded.

Artistic Interpretation

With the inserted picture window, Graf plays with layers: the bird sits in front of a picture within the picture and seems to mediate between two spaces. A bird study thus becomes a quiet reflection on seeing and the boundary between nature and painting.
