Visual Description
Several figures line up into a panorama: a samurai with a topknot, a young woman with red cheeks in a yellow garment, a geisha with a golden eye mask and a woman with closed eyes. On the right rises a pagoda with a star-covered roof; in between are patterns, coral branches, dots and grasses in orange, pink, turquoise and yellow.
Artistic Interpretation
The picture tells of the roles and rituals of a culture that raises form and staging to an art. Masks, makeup and garments stand for the question of how much we reveal of ourselves—a motif that runs through Graf’s work.
Art-Historical Context
The composition combines the narrative richness of Japanese scroll paintings with the collage aesthetics of Pop Art. Patterned surfaces, stencil structures and the flat arrangement of the figures create a contemporary reading of Japonisme.
Exclusivity
A one-of-a-kind work full of details and narrative layers: each figure has its own pattern, each surface its own structure. The picture invites long viewing and keeps revealing new details.
Collector Value
A lively work for spaces where conversations happen: dining and living rooms, restaurants, hotels and agencies. In its 80 × 100 cm format, it forms a coherent Japanese trilogy with the two geisha paintings.
