Visual Description
“In the Mirror” shows a heavily blurred, sepia-toned scene reminiscent of a mirror image. A human silhouette emerges in shadowy form, while a round mirror or circular structure becomes visible in the background. Dark lines—almost like random scratches or drawn interventions—run across the picture.
The palette is reduced and warm: ocher, brown and beige dominate. Grain and blur create an almost analog, nostalgic atmosphere. The motif does not feel documentary but like a memory—blurred, shifted, emotionally charged.
Artistic Interpretation
At the heart of the work is the question of self-perception and distance. The mirror acts as a symbolic space—not as a clear instrument of reflection but as a filter. The subject cannot be grasped clearly. Identity is not confirmed but dissolved.
The blur here is not a technical accident but a conceptual means.
It points to memory as a fragile process. What we see is less a likeness than a projection—a state between presence and withdrawal.
The dark lines read like interventions in the surface, as if the picture itself were being questioned or crossed out. “In the Mirror” is not a portrait but an investigation of how we look at ourselves.
Art-Historical Context
Formally, the work moves between experimental photography, painterly reworking and conceptual interpretation. The strong blur connects to photographic strategies that do not depict reality but transform it atmospherically.
In content, the work stands in a contemporary tradition that understands identity as fluid and fragmented. The mirror is a motif heavily charged with art history—here, however, it is used not for confirmation but to unsettle.
Exclusivity
“In the mirror” takes away the mirror’s classic function: instead of self-assurance, it produces an image of blur. The warm sepia palette, the analog-looking grain and the drawn interventions combine into a surface that is at once photographic and painterly. In its large format of 160 × 120 cm, this one-of-a-kind work unfolds a quiet, unmistakable presence—precisely because it does not resolve the gaze, but holds it.
Within the work group “Fragile Identities,” it is the piece that addresses the theme of self-image most directly: without typography, without an accent of color, with nothing but light, grain and line.
Collector Value
This work is especially suited to collectors engaged with themes such as identity, memory and perception.
In a room, “In the Mirror” feels meditative and introspective. It creates closeness and distance at once—a picture that suggests more than it shows.
