Visual Description
The work shows the cropped face of an old woman in extreme close-up. Only part of her face is visible: a wide-open, intensely blue eye, the right half of the nose and a mouth whose expression hovers between a smile and strain. Deep wrinkles, changes in the skin and fine lines are rendered with great directness.
A bright blue cloth frames the left side of the picture and picks up the color of the iris. The cool blues stand in clear contrast to the warm pinks, beiges and reds of the face. The tight crop denies any distanced way of looking at the sitter.
Artistic Interpretation
“Erfahrung” (German for “experience”) shows age not as loss but as a visible concentration of lived time. Every wrinkle appears like a stored trace. The face becomes the landscape of a life in which vulnerability, resilience and memory are present at once.
The eye is at the center. Clear, alert and almost challenging, it returns the viewer’s gaze. The ambiguous mouth prevents a sentimental reading. Is it a smile, a grimace or a moment of physical effort? Hübner deliberately leaves the question open. Experience here does not mean serene detachment but an attentiveness that life has preserved.
Art-Historical Context
The work connects the tradition of the physiognomic portrait with strategies of contemporary figurative painting. The radical crop recalls photographic and cinematic close-ups. It detaches the face from its surroundings and focuses perception entirely on skin, eye and expression.
The precise observation of physical aging meets expressive exaggeration. Hübner does not idealize the sitter. In doing so, he follows a realist portrait tradition that creates dignity not by smoothing things over but through the unprotected visibility of the person. Color and line serve not only likeness but heighten the psychological presence.
Exclusivity
A one-of-a-kind work with strong visual and emotional recognition value. The extreme crop, the bright blue eye and the uncompromising depiction of aged skin give the work an immediate presence.
Within Hübner’s oeuvre, “Erfahrung” holds a special place. The portrait does without the neon interventions that later became characteristic and focuses entirely on human expression. It is precisely this formal reduction that makes the work a compelling document of his figurative development.
Collector Value
“Erfahrung” is a psychologically concentrated portrait that resists a fleeting glance. From a distance, the intense blue of the eye draws the viewer in. Up close, the many lines, color transitions and traces from which Hübner built the face reveal themselves.
The work suits private and institutional collections focused on contemporary portrait painting, human identity, age and memory. On a central wall it develops a strong, almost dialogic effect: the woman depicted is not simply looked at—she looks back.
More About the Artist
Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.
Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, as well as his selection as a finalist in the Teravarna International Juried Art Competition 2025, mark his artistic development.
