Visual Description

Five barn swallows sit on a taut wire running across the picture. The background consists of a large, textured field of ocher and yellow, with a dark stripe below and a rust-brown band reminiscent of a wall. The birds are painted precisely and with liveliness.

Artistic Interpretation

The picture lives from emptiness and rhythm. The swallows form two small groups that seem to communicate with each other. With few means, Graf tells of rest, belonging and the coming departure.

Art-Historical Context

The radical reduction of the background to fields of color combines Graf’s precise bird painting with the strategies of color-field painting. The work thus belongs to his new, contemporary visual language.

Exclusivity

Landscape format, 80 × 100 cm, in acrylic. Together with “Schwalben auf Ansitz 2,” it forms a pair of works with the same pictorial idea and a different composition.

Collector Value

A calm, modern work for lofts, offices, practices and minimalist living spaces. Especially effective as a pair with “Schwalben auf Ansitz 2.”
