Visual Description
Three women stand side by side and look straight out of the picture. Each wears her own headpiece: a braided band with a small bird’s nest, a hat with a painted rooster, a checkered cap with strings of pearls. Patterned garments in yellow, pink and sky blue merge with a light-filled background of orange, yellow and gray, across which birds fly.
Artistic Interpretation
The title says it all: the picture describes not a geographical place but an inner one. The three figures are different and yet connected—by closeness, bearing and the warm light that surrounds them. The bird’s nest on the head of the figure on the left becomes a quiet symbol of security and new beginnings.
Art-Historical Context
Graf combines the tradition of the group portrait with the joy of color of Fauvism. Flat, luminous spaces of color and ornamental fabric patterns recall Matisse, while the frontal, icon-like presence of the figures recalls folk art and traditional costume portraits. The result is a contemporary visual language about community.
Exclusivity
A large, square one-of-a-kind work built up from glazed and opaque layers of acrylic. The precisely drawn faces stand in appealing contrast to the free, gestural background. The narrative details—nest, rooster, strings of pearls—reward a second and third look.
Collector Value
A work with a positive, welcoming presence for spaces where people come together: reception areas, hotels, practices, living and dining rooms. The square format (100 × 100 cm) acts as a calm focal point on a wall and connects with Graf’s group of works “Gesichter & Geschichten” (Faces & Stories).
