Visual Description
Three heads in profile and facing forward, set into luminous fields of color with strong black contours. A flower blooms on the cheek of the figure on the left, the middle one wears a blue dot on the forehead, and the one on the right appears as a stylized mask with a circular ornament and golden passages. Turquoise, orange, red and yellow come together in a mosaic-like picture space.
Artistic Interpretation
The work speaks of diversity in unity. The faces overlap and touch; none stands alone. Masks and signs refer to rituals and origins, and color unites them in a shared harmony.
Art-Historical Context
The visual language takes up modernism’s engagement with African mask art—from Picasso to Cubism—and carries it into a respectful, color-rich contemporary language. Contour and color field also recall stained glass and mosaic.
Exclusivity
A dense, compactly composed one-of-a-kind work with graphic clarity and rich color. Golden accents set points of light and give the small format a precious quality.
Collector Value
Ideal as an entry point into Graf’s work or as an addition to a wall grouping. At 40 × 60 cm it suits hallways, studies, reading corners and smaller rooms, and forms a thematic series with “Africa queen” and “We will be free.”
