Visual Description

The work shows a stylized portrait seen slightly from below, pared down yet precisely worked out. The figure wears oversized, opaque glasses and prominent headphones – both read as deliberate barriers to the outside world.

The palette is tightly controlled: an intense red dominates clothing and accessories, while the background is held in a calm, muted green. The contrast creates a controlled visual tension.

Two goldfish move through the picture – one close to the head, another in the foreground. Their motion is fluid, almost organic, and stands against the static, shielded presence of the figure. Small air bubbles heighten the sense of a quiet, removed space.

Artistic Interpretation

“Seh nichts – Hör nichts” describes a state of deliberate withdrawal. The figure purposely shuts out perception: the glasses block the view outward, the headphones block sound. The result is an image of self-isolation – not necessarily as weakness, but as a controlled choice.

The goldfish, meanwhile, remain in motion. They can be read as inner images, thoughts or emotional impulses that keep working despite the outer shield. While the outside world is faded out, the inner world stays active.

What emerges is a tension between retreat and inner movement, between silence and ongoing perception.

Art-Historical Context

The work belongs to contemporary figurative painting, with clear references to Pop Art and symbolic present-day art.

The clear, reduced formal language and strong fields of color recall pop-cultural imagery, while the pairing of a human figure with a symbolic animal motif brings it close to Surrealism and narrative painting.

The use of recurring motifs within a series – here the goldfish – also points to a conceptual way of working that thinks beyond the single image.

Exclusivity

As part of the Goldfish Trilogy, this work is a central piece of a series with a closed narrative.

Its clear visual idea – shielding oneself through sight and sound – is translated consistently into a concise pictorial language. The iconic figure, the reduced color dramaturgy and the dynamic countermovements give the work a presence of its own within the series.

The visible painterly execution and the artist’s personal hand underline its character as an original.

Collector Value

Its value for collectors lies in an idea that reads instantly yet carries real depth. The work makes an immediate impact through its strong visual presence, and on longer viewing it opens a nuanced reflection on perception, retreat and inner movement.

Its iconic depiction, reduced palette and symbolic density make it a natural fit for collections looking for contemporary positions with narrative and conceptual strength.

As part of a series, the work gains further significance: it does not stand alone but belongs to a larger narrative – an aspect that tends to grow in relevance for collectors over time.

More About the Artist

Rike develops a visual language that moves between stylized figuration and symbolic condensation.

Characteristic of her work is a precise use of color as a carrier of meaning: surfaces are deliberately reduced and contrasts placed with intent, so that every element in the picture has a clear function. At first glance her works seem calm and controlled, yet with longer viewing they open up a more complex layer between emotion, attitude and inner state.

Recurring motifs—such as the goldfish here—are not used illustratively but as carriers of meaning in their own right, extending the picture beyond what is visible.

The result is work that does not only show but asks questions—quietly, yet lastingly.
