Visual Description

A young woman with dark hair turns toward the viewer. Her face is contorted: nose wrinkled, eyes narrowed, teeth tightly clenched. The index and middle fingers of her right hand rest against her temple.

The figure is painted in black, white and gray, set against a gray ground on the right and a pale ground on the left. Her hair blows to the left and turns into an explosion of color there: blue, yellow, orange, neon green and pink, splashed and smeared. Below it, black drips run horizontally across the surface.

Artistic Interpretation

“Zukunft im Kopf” (Future in Mind) shows a state of intense inner tension. The gesture at the temple is ambiguous. It may point to thinking, pressure or overload. Hübner does not pin it down.

Color bursts out where thoughts reside. What happens in the mind is flung outward. The title links this movement to the future: to plans, expectations and fears that can both drive and burden a person. Viewers recognize an experience that is widespread today, along with a question of how much future a mind can hold.

Art-Historical Context

The grimace recalls the character heads of Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, who systematically explored extreme facial expressions. The exploding color connects to gestural painting and street art. Hübner brings both lines together in a psychological portrait of the present.

Exclusivity

“Zukunft im Kopf” is a unique work in acrylic on canvas in a large horizontal format, 80 × 120 cm, painted in August 2026. Fluorescent pigments react to UV light. Under black light the explosion of color glows, while the face recedes.

Collector Value

The work belongs to the group “Inner States” and is one of Hübner’s large-format paintings. With its strong presence, it suits spaces where art is meant to take a clear stance. For collectors, it is a central example of how he combines figuration, emotion and fluorescent color.

More About the Artist

Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.

Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
