Visual Description

In daylight, “Oberfläche” presents an almost monochrome white canvas in a white floater frame. Two vertical bands of raised, crackled paint run along the left and right sides. The small broken flakes cast fine shadows and give the surface a tactile quality. No image is visible, only the signature in the lower left corner.

Under UV light, the picture changes completely. Between the two relief bands, a frontal face appears in cool violet and blue. Eyes, brows, nose and mouth stand out clearly, while the contours dissolve softly toward the edges. The gaze is directed straight at the viewer.

Artistic Interpretation

The core of the work lies in this shift. What appears in ordinary light as a calm, almost abstract structure carries a hidden portrait. Hübner raises the question of how much of a person can be seen on the surface and what only becomes visible under different conditions.

The crackled texture can be read as skin, as a protective layer or as a trace of time. The face, by contrast, is smooth and clear. The painting refuses to say which of the two views is the real one. Both belong together.

Art-Historical Context

The white relief surface recalls the monochrome works of the ZERO group and Piero Manzoni’s “Achromes,” where material and light take the place of the image. Hübner links this tradition to the principle of the hidden picture, familiar from the pentimento, the painted-over layer beneath a visible surface, and translates it into the technique of fluorescent paint.

Exclusivity

“Oberfläche” is a unique work in acrylic on canvas, approx. 66 × 46 cm, completed in August 2026 and housed in a white floater frame of lacquered solid wood. Here the UV-reactive layer is not an addition but carries the entire image. Without black light, the portrait remains invisible.

Collector Value

The work shows Hübner’s experimental engagement with perception in a particularly rigorous form. It functions in two lighting situations, which makes it well suited to spaces where lighting can be designed deliberately, such as private collections, lounges or curated interior projects.

For collectors who want conceptual clarity combined with painterly precision, “Oberfläche” is a distinct position within Hübner’s work.

More About the Artist

Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.

Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
