Visual Description
Two hands meet at the center of the picture. They are painted in shades of gray, sculptural and detailed, with spread, slightly curled fingers. One reaches to the left, the other up and to the right. Creases, knuckles and palm lines are carefully worked out.
Behind the hands, a radial burst of color opens up. From a core of orange, red and yellow, splashes and drips in green, blue and turquoise run outward, interspersed with black areas. The paint seems flung out by a spinning motion. Ring-shaped bands strengthen the impression of a vortex.
Artistic Interpretation
“Hypnose” (Hypnosis) combines two movements: the pull toward the center and the reach outward. The hands seem to grasp and fend off at the same time. Whether they are steering something or being steered remains open.
Hübner translates a psychological state into an image built on contrast. The gray, almost sculptural figuration stands for what can be grasped. The glowing vortex behind it stands for what escapes control. Viewers are drawn into this tension, because the painting has no calm center.
Art-Historical Context
Since Albrecht Dürer’s studies, the hand has been a subject in its own right. Hübner links this tradition of close observation with methods that recall Action Painting and the spin paintings of the postwar avant-garde. Realism and gestural abstraction do not sit side by side here; they interlock.
Exclusivity
“Hypnose” is a unique work in acrylic on canvas, 100 × 70 cm, painted in April 2025. Fluorescent pigments react to UV light. Under black light the vortex of color comes forward while the gray hands recede, opening a second level of perception.
Collector Value
The work belongs to the group “Inner States” and shows Hübner’s characteristic combination of precise figuration and intense color in a particularly dynamic form. It has already been shown publicly at Galerie Tschart in Leipzig in 2025. For collectors, it offers a strong example of his current painting with a clear presence in any room.
More About the Artist
Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.
Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
