Visual Description
Monochrome figuration against speckled light and dark surfaces. On the left, a figure seen from behind sets down a neon-red horizontal stroke; on the right, a young figure in profile tilts the head back with arms open, glowing traces of paint across forehead and face. Rigorous chiaroscuro modeling meets a single, vibrating diagonal of color that connects the two pictures.
Artistic Interpretation
The series traces an arc from gesture to resonance: the first, deliberate act (Anfang, “beginning”) becomes experience in the second picture (Ende, “end”)—an inner mark that shapes identity. Themes: courage, self-empowerment, letting go. Technical control and physical freedom become a picture about attitude.
Art-Historical Context
A concise dialogue between New Figuration and a reduced gesture of color. The neon-red stroke refers to Minimalist and color-field strategies and to urban and street art (speckles, drips), while the photographic cropping places the works in a contemporary, graphically clear visual language. As a diptych, the series connects to modernist ideas of the paired picture and the series.
Exclusivity
Two one-of-a-kind works with Hübner’s unmistakable signature style: monochrome figuration plus a single neon impulse.
A conceptual diptych: each work stands on its own, yet together they develop an iconic narrative axis (gesture → echo).
Strong in an exhibition setting thanks to clear impact from a distance and a striking curatorial order.
Collector Value
A compelling choice for central walls; ideal as a set (recommended hanging: Anfang on the left, Ende on the right, 8–12 cm apart).
A way to build a group of works within Hübner’s dialogue between monochrome and color—high recognition value and thematic coherence.
Works in private and public spaces where art is meant to bring clarity, energy and meaning.
More About the Artist
Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast black and white with neon/UV color in modern surrealistic realism; people, emotions and open interpretations are at the center, and since 2020 he has been working experimentally again. Early prizes (GDR 1989, Europe 1993) and his selection as a 2025 Teravarna finalist mark his development.
