Visual Description
Three faces interlock, drawn with strong black contours and broken up into luminous fields of color: yellow, orange, blue and red. One face tilts with closed eyes, another looks alertly to the side. Green dot and flower patterns add rhythmic accents.
Artistic Interpretation
The faces seem like masks and at the same time like the people behind the masks. The picture asks how many roles we play in life and where closeness begins. The overlapping makes visible how closely identities are interwoven.
Art-Historical Context
Breaking the face down into fields of color and contours stands in the tradition of Cubism and the expressive portrait painting of modernism. Graf translates this formal language into warm, contemporary color.
Exclusivity
A compact one-of-a-kind work of great density. Together with “Life and Masks 2,” it forms a diptych in an identical format that is especially impressive when presented as a pair.
Collector Value
An ideal entry point into Graf’s work and a strong pair for collectors who value connections between works. At 40 × 40 cm it suits smaller rooms, hallways and studies; as a diptych with “Life and Masks 2,” it becomes a striking wall installation.
