Visual Description

“Strand” is a narrow vertical painting. At its center a woman sits with her knees drawn up on a bright blue, trapezoid surface. She wears a wide-brimmed blue hat and covers her face with her hand. Her body is painted in warm brown tones, sculptural and with clear light on her shoulders, knees and shins.

A salmon-red cloth runs diagonally through the picture as a broad band, wrapping around the figure. Drips of paint run down from it, as they do from the blue surface. The background is held in grays and whites: a cloudy sky above a flat, hazy horizon.

Artistic Interpretation

The title points to a place of leisure, yet the painting does not show a beach scene in the usual sense. The woman sits on an abstract surface as if on an island, enclosed in a posture of retreat. Hat and hand shield her from view and from the light.

The running paint brings motion and transience into the calm composition. The band connects the figure to the space and at the same time holds her in place. The result is an image between pause and isolation, between a summer memory and inner composure.

Art-Historical Context

The combination of a realistically painted figure, a cloudy sky and enigmatically floating elements recalls Surrealism, for example the skies of René Magritte. The figure with a hidden face belongs to a long tradition of images about intimacy and self-protection. Hübner translates these motifs into a contemporary language with strong accents of color.

Exclusivity

“Strand” is a unique work in acrylic on canvas, measuring 140 × 70 cm. It contains UV-reactive paint; under black light individual elements emerge as a second pictorial layer.

The work belongs to the group “Body and Resonance.” Unlike many of Hübner’s works, the figure here is painted not in black and white but in warm skin tones.

Collector Value

The narrow vertical format suits wall spaces between windows, in hallways or beside furniture, wherever a vertical accent is wanted. Its calm mood also makes it well suited to private rooms.

As a large original from 2025, “Strand” represents Hübner’s combination of the human figure and surreal pictorial logic.

More About the Artist

Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.

Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
