Visual Description

A ballet dancer stands en pointe, her back bent far backward. One arm reaches up, the other points down. She wears a black two-piece costume. The body is painted in grays and whites, with muscles and joints precisely modeled. The figure stands against a bright blue ground.

On the right, a red curtain falls from the top to the lower edge. It is not only painted but built out from the surface in fiberglass relief; its folds cast real shadows. A light frame encloses the work.

Artistic Interpretation

“Show” depicts the moment of performance. The curtain is open, and the dancer is already in full motion. Her taut posture reveals how much control and discipline lie behind the apparent ease.

The title is deliberately ambiguous. It refers to the performance on stage but can also point to how we present ourselves in everyday life. Between the flat blue, the painted figure and the sculptural curtain, a stage space of its own emerges for viewers to look into.

Art-Historical Context

Ballet and the stage have been an important subject of painting since Edgar Degas. Hübner combines this motif with a three-dimensional element, connecting to traditions in which painting reaches beyond the surface into space, as in assemblage and the relief painting.

Exclusivity

The work is a unique piece in acrylic and fiberglass on pressboard, measuring 60 × 40 cm and completed in January 2026. The relief of the curtain makes the piece an object that cannot be repeated. Hübner uses UV-reactive paint, which opens a second level of perception under black light.

Collector Value

“Show” belongs to the group of works “Body and Resonance” and was shown at Favori Art GENESIS 1 in Gleina in 2026. It combines painting and relief in a format that is easy to place. It suits collectors interested in dance and the stage, and it offers an entry point into Hübner’s recent, material-driven works.

More About the Artist

Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.

Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
