Visual Description

“Frühling 2 (Spring 2)” is a horizontal painting showing a young woman in profile. Her head is tilted back, her chin raised, her eyes closed. Her dark hair is tied in a loose bun, with single strands falling across her forehead and neck. Face, neck and shoulder are painted in black and white with finely graded grays.

The composition is clearly structured. Behind the head stands a vertical turquoise band between deep black areas. A translucent red beam of light falls diagonally onto the face from the upper left, and a second red diagonal lies across her shoulder and chest like a cloth. At the upper left a dark red field closes the picture.

Artistic Interpretation

The woman’s posture is open and receptive. With her chin raised and eyes closed, she seems to take in light or warmth. The title links this gesture to the season of new beginnings without showing a motif from nature. Spring appears here as an inner state.

The geometric fields of color form a deliberate counterpoint to the soft modeling of the face. The red passes through the figure without concealing it. The result is a painting about sensation and presence, in which calm and tension coexist.

Art-Historical Context

The profile is one of the oldest forms of portraiture, from ancient coins to the portraits of the early Italian Renaissance. Hübner combines this tradition with flat, geometric color fields of the kind known from Constructivist and hard-edge painting, translating them into a contemporary visual language.

Exclusivity

“Frühling 2 (Spring 2)” is a unique work in acrylic on canvas, measuring 100 × 120 cm. It contains UV-reactive paint; under black light the relationship between turquoise, red and black shifts.

It belongs to the group “Body and Resonance.” The first work in the series, “Frühling 1 (Spring 1),” was created in April 2026 and is also presented on Favori Art.

Collector Value

The work was exhibited in 2026 at the Cosy Festival at Schloss Dornburg. Its horizontal format suits walls above sideboards or sofas and reception areas, where the clear composition reads well from a distance.

As a large, recent original, the painting shows Hübner’s move toward stricter pictorial structures while keeping his precision in the figure.

More About the Artist

Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.

Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
