Visual Description

“Frühling 1 (Spring 1)” is a large vertical painting of a standing woman shown in three-quarter length. Both arms are raised, one hand resting on her forehead, the other at the back of her head. Her head is slightly lowered, her eyes closed. She wears an open black leather jacket with zippers and studs over a short tied top, and below it a light skirt with a thick, restless surface.

The figure is painted in black and white and stands against a vivid pink field. Toward the edges the pink frays into a strong turquoise. Along the transitions, fine crackled textures appear in the paint.

Artistic Interpretation

The pose combines confidence with reflection. The raised arms open the body, while the hand on the forehead and the lowered gaze turn it inward. The leather jacket signals attitude and style; the body beneath it shows vulnerability and presence.

The title can be read as an image of renewal. Spring appears not as an idyll but as a moment of self-assurance. The bright color of the background heightens the calm of the gray figure.

Art-Historical Context

The composition recalls fashion photography and Pop Art, which brought images from advertising and the media into painting. At the same time, the standing, inward-turned figure belongs to the tradition of classical figure painting. Hübner joins both levels in a large, contemporary statement.

Exclusivity

“Frühling 1 (Spring 1)” is a unique work in acrylic on canvas, measuring approx. 160 × 130 cm. Hübner works with UV-reactive paint; under black light the pink and turquoise reveal a second, more intense pictorial layer.

The work belongs to the group “Body and Resonance.” The second work in the series, “Frühling 2 (Spring 2),” was created in June 2026.

Collector Value

At around 160 × 130 cm, the painting is among the largest formats in Hübner’s current body of work. It suits generous walls in homes, lofts, hotels or corporate spaces where a figurative work with strong color is meant to create a clear focal point.

As a large original from 2026, it holds a central place among his recent works.

More About the Artist

Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.

Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
