Visual Description

A man in work clothes stands in the upper third of the picture, bent forward over a jackhammer. He wears a light cap, a short-sleeved shirt and overalls. The figure is painted in black, white and gray and observed with photographic precision.

The picture is divided into three zones. At the top lies a deep blue, in the middle a black area on which the man stands. Where the chisel strikes, the black breaks open. A network of red cracks runs along the edge, and beneath it opens a flat, glowing red-orange zone that fills the lower third.

Artistic Interpretation

“Ausbruch” (Eruption) turns an everyday work scene into an image of pressure and release. The man works with concentration and does not look at us. The consequence of his action is larger than the action itself: beneath the surface lies an energy that can no longer be contained.

The scene can also be read as an inner one. What has long been covered suddenly comes to light. Hübner leaves open whether this eruption means liberation or danger. Viewers face a pictorial order that seems stable and yet is already breaking apart.

Art-Historical Context

The depiction of physical labor has its own tradition, from Gustave Courbet’s “Stone Breakers” to Adolph Menzel’s “Iron Rolling Mill.” Hübner joins this realist legacy with clear fields of color reminiscent of Color Field painting and with a surreal turn that opens the motif to a psychological reading.

Exclusivity

“Ausbruch” is a unique work in acrylic on canvas, 105 × 65 cm, painted in March 2026. Fluorescent pigments react to UV light. Under black light the red zone begins to glow and heightens the sense of something breaking through.

Collector Value

The work belongs to the group “Inner States” and combines a figurative scene with a strong graphic composition. For collectors, it offers a striking example of Hübner’s ability to turn everyday images into metaphors with few means. In a room it reads clearly and with force.

More About the Artist

Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.

Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
