Visual Description

“AD(H)S” shows a woman in profile, her head slightly lowered, her eyes closed. Her hands are clasped and pressed to her forehead. Face, hair and hands are painted in finely graded grays, with the creases of the fingers and the line of the profile drawn with precision.

Around the figure, dense color unfolds. Yellow and green form the ground, overlaid with bright orange lines that loop and arc, some passing across her face. In the lower left, the paint gathers into red, gestural areas. The picture feels calm at its center and in motion at its edges.

Artistic Interpretation

The title, the German abbreviation for ADHD, names a form of neurodivergence that many people know from their own lives or from those around them. Hübner does not turn it into a clinical image or a diagnosis. He shows a person gathering herself amid many impressions. The parentheses in the title suggest that experiences can differ.

The orange lines can be read as thoughts, impulses or outside stimuli circling the figure. Her posture is focused rather than defensive. The painting honors the strength involved in concentrating and leaves room for the viewer’s own reading.

Art-Historical Context

The hands pressed to the forehead recall the long pictorial tradition of devotion and inner reflection, shaped by works such as Albrecht Dürer’s “Praying Hands.” Hübner pairs this motif with a free, energetic layer of color that connects to the gestural painting of the twentieth century.

Exclusivity

“AD(H)S” is a unique work in acrylic on canvas, 100 × 70 cm, completed in August 2025. The fluorescent layers react to UV light. Under black light, the lines become more pronounced while the gray figure recedes.

Collector Value

The work received a Certificate of Merit for Artistic Achievement at the Luxembourg Art Prize 2025. This recognition places the painting within the international context of Hübner’s recent development.

As part of the work group “Inner States,” “AD(H)S” appeals to collectors seeking psychologically rich figuration combined with intense color. The format suits homes as well as practices, offices or educational settings.

More About the Artist

Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.

Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
