Mathias Grey is in his mid-forties, good-looking, a writer, and has been too worn out to write a book for two years. His wife Mathilde owns the villa and the fortune and, as he believes, him as well. When he is attacked one September night, a flight begins that takes him across the country. He thinks he is the hunter, yet he is the prey wherever he goes: with a gas station clerk, with a painter, with a stranger in a nightclub.

Only one woman takes him seriously: his neighbor Abigail Warren, a former crime writer who pours whiskey the way others hand out advice. With wit and momentum, the novel asks what is left of a seducer once his vanity crumbles and his body no longer plays along.
