Visual Description

A geisha in a pink kimono with a floral pattern stands facing the viewer in front of a turquoise circle. Her pinned-up hair is adorned with flowers and kanzashi hairpins. Magnificent fighting fish with flowing fins swim around her, while birds, cherry-blossom branches and golden ornaments enliven the light ground.

Artistic Interpretation

The fish seem to glide freely through air and space—a poetic image of transformation and lightness. The geisha remains calm, almost otherworldly: she embodies grace as an attitude and a beauty born of concentration and ritual.

Art-Historical Context

The work stands in the tradition of Japonisme, which has shaped European painting since the nineteenth century. Echoes of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and decorative Art Nouveau combine with Graf’s richly colored, contemporary portraiture. It is the companion piece to “Japanese Geisha with Cranes.”

Exclusivity

A large vertical work of particular elegance. Golden line ornaments, finely painted fins and the balanced interplay of pink, turquoise and gold make this one-of-a-kind work one of the artist’s most decoratively rich pieces.

Collector Value

A representative work for spaces with style and calm: living rooms and bedrooms, spa and wellness areas, hotels and practices. The 80 × 120 cm format can carry a wall on its own and harmonizes with “Japanese Geisha with Cranes” and “Japanese life.”
