Visual Description
An extreme close-up of a screaming face in monochrome; the hands press against cheeks and temples. A bright orange block lies across the forehead and hair, with paint running down from it. Intense blue lines and drops flow along the contours and as tears—on a deep, dark ground.
Artistic Interpretation
“Wohin?” (German for “Where to?”) condenses overload, searching and urgency. The orange block marks pressure from outside; the blue tears visualize energy, pain and catharsis. Between outcry and plea, a picture emerges about orientation, the unspoken and the question of direction.
Art-Historical Context
New Figuration in a photographic close-up meets Pop and urban aesthetics: a bold block of color, drips and a selective neon/UV feel. The iconic contrast of black and white with orange and blue positions the work in a contemporary, cinematic visual language.
Exclusivity
A one-of-a-kind work with high recognition value: a strict portrait format, an orange band as a signal and blue lines of tears as a recurring motif. Precise grayscale modeling—a clearly identifiable Hübner signature style.
Collector Value
A statement piece that reads strongly from a distance and has psychological depth—a compelling choice for central placements in galleries, cultural venues and reception areas, and in private collections focused on emotion, attitude and urban visual rhetoric.
More About the Artist
Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast black and white with neon/UV color in modern surrealistic realism; people, emotions and open interpretations are at the center, and since 2020 he has been working experimentally again. Early prizes (GDR 1989, Europe 1993) and his selection as a 2025 Teravarna finalist mark his development.
