Visual Description
“Sommerregen” shows a woman seen from behind. She wears a long, fitted black dress laced up the back and holds an open black umbrella above her. Her dark hair falls to her shoulders. The figure is painted in black, white and gray and stands at the center of the picture.
The background is mostly turquoise, with a scraped, slightly weathered surface. In the lower third, two red blocks of color stand left and right, and the figure walks between them. The work is framed in black.
Artistic Interpretation
The woman turns away from the viewer and walks into the picture space. Her face remains hidden, as does her destination. The title links the scene to a warm rain that feels more refreshing than threatening.
Her calm, upright posture and the elegant dress lend the scene a sense of composure. The two red fields read like walls or thresholds through which the figure makes her way. The result is an image about being on the move and about self-determination. The reduced palette directs attention entirely to posture and silhouette.
Art-Historical Context
Since Caspar David Friedrich, the figure seen from behind has been a central motif in painting: it invites viewers to share the figure’s gaze. Hübner transfers this motif into an urban, graphically reduced scene with clear fields of color.
Exclusivity
“Sommerregen” is a unique work in acrylic on pressboard, measuring 52 × 42 cm, framed in black. It contains UV-reactive paint; under black light the turquoise and red emerge as a second pictorial layer.
It belongs to the “Schirm” (Umbrella) series, which Hübner has been developing since 2025, and to the group “Body and Resonance.”
Collector Value
The framed, manageable format is ready to hang and suits living rooms, studies, hallways or hospitality spaces. Together with “Reise,” it can form a pair from the series.
“Sommerregen” offers a good entry point into Hübner’s work and into the “Schirm” series.
More About the Artist
Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.
Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
