Visual Description
“Rose” is a narrow vertical painting of a single long-stemmed rose. Bloom, stem and leaves are painted in black and gray, with bright highlights on the petals and the serrated edges of the leaves. Thin black trails of paint run straight down from the stem and leaves to the bottom edge.
The background is held in strong, fluorescent orange and red, with smeared, energetic brushwork. Toward the edges green, yellow and pink mix into the surface, and fine spatters appear at lower right.
Artistic Interpretation
The rose is one of the most charged motifs in visual culture: a sign of love, beauty and devotion. Hübner takes away its color and sets it as a dark silhouette against a glowing ground. The flower appears serious and focused.
The running trails of paint connect the rose to the ground and suggest tears, time or loss. At the same time, the bloom remains closed and upright. The painting holds this tension between strength and vulnerability open.
Art-Historical Context
The rose runs through art history, from medieval images of the Virgin to Baroque flower still lifes and into the present. Running paint as a deliberate device is familiar from gestural painting and street art. Hübner combines both in a clear, contemporary flower painting.
Exclusivity
“Rose” is a unique work in acrylic on canvas, measuring 80 × 40 cm. It is painted with UV-reactive paint; under black light the luminous background reveals a second pictorial layer.
The work belongs to the series “Natur” (Nature), together with “Sonnenblume” and “Roter Mohn,” and to the group “Inner States.”
Collector Value
The narrow format suits wall spaces beside doors and windows, in hallways, bedrooms or smaller rooms. Together with “Sonnenblume,” it can be hung as a pair from the series.
Shown in 2026 at Favori Art GENESIS 1 and at the Cosy Festival at Schloss Dornburg, “Rose” offers an accessible entry point into Hübner’s work.
More About the Artist
Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.
Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
