Visual Description

“Resonanz” shows the face of a young woman seen from the front, head and neck tilted slightly back, eyes closed. Strands of hair fall across her forehead and cheek. The figure is painted not in black and white but entirely in shades of blue, from light, almost white highlights on the forehead and lips to deep ultramarine in the shadows.

Gestural zones of color gather around the face: vivid green, vertical stripes of neon orange, yellow-green drips from the top edge and passages of pink and violet at lower left. Along the edges lies dark, almost black material with a granular texture.

Artistic Interpretation

The title describes a process between inside and outside. The woman seems entirely self-contained, as if listening for a sound, a memory or a feeling. The color around her can be read as an echo of this inner movement.

By setting the figure entirely in blue, Hübner frees it from naturalistic representation. The face becomes a surface on which light and mood are at work. The vertical bands of color and drips give the painting a rhythm that suggests vibration and reverberation.

Art-Historical Context

Freeing color from the object links the work to the Fauves and to Expressionism, which painted faces in non-naturalistic colors. The drips and neon accents refer to the visual language of street art and graffiti. Hübner brings both together in a psychologically dense portrait.

Exclusivity

“Resonanz” is a unique work in acrylic on canvas, measuring 120 × 100 cm. It is painted with UV-reactive paint; under black light the neon passages reveal a second, more intense pictorial layer.

It belongs to the group “Body and Resonance,” whose title this painting echoes.

Collector Value

“Resonanz” was shown in 2026 at Favori Art GENESIS 1 in Gleina and at the Cosy Festival at Schloss Dornburg. The work exemplifies Hübner’s current engagement with luminous color and inner states.

At 120 × 100 cm, it works in living spaces as well as in practices, offices or reception areas looking for a calm yet richly colored piece.

More About the Artist

Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.

Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
