Visual Description
A female figure seems to float in midair. Her back is arched, her arms are raised above her head, her legs extended, toes pointing down. She wears a black top and black briefs, and long dark hair falls back. The body is modeled in grays and blacks.
The figure stands within a pale vertical band. Drips of orange, pink and yellow run down from the top. The two side panels are black, crossed by blue drips and single blue dots. No ground is visible.
Artistic Interpretation
“Freiheit” does not describe a political condition but a physical one. The figure has lost contact with the ground and seems entirely absorbed in movement. Whether it is a leap, a fall or an ascent remains suspended.
The tension between figure and paint is what makes the work compelling: the drips follow gravity downward while the body stretches upward. Hübner shows that freedom can be a moment that arises against resistance.
Art-Historical Context
The dancing body has been a central motif of modern art since Edgar Degas. The dripping paint recalls the methods of Action Painting, in which the painting process itself remains visible. Hübner brings both traditions together: precise figuration and a free, gestural trace of color.
Exclusivity
The work is a unique piece in acrylic on canvas, measuring 70 × 50 cm and completed in October 2024. Hübner uses UV-reactive paint. Under black light, the luminous drips begin to glow and shift the relationship between figure and space.
Collector Value
“Freiheit” belongs to the group of works “Body and Resonance” and was shown at Galerie Tschart in Leipzig in 2025. The work combines a clearly defined figure with a lively field of color. It suits collectors looking for movement and dance in contemporary painting, as well as living and working spaces with calm surroundings where the color can come into its own.
More About the Artist
Matthias Hübner (b. 1976) combines high-contrast figuration with intense color and an open, psychologically charged visual language in modern surrealistic realism. People, emotions and different levels of perception are at the center of his work. Since returning to painting in 2020, he has continued to develop his artistic position experimentally.
Early awards at the GDR youth painting competition in 1989 and the European painting competition in 1993, along with international recognition in recent years, mark his artistic development.
