A face that only emerges from a distance: “Träumende Tropfen” (Dreaming Drops) is one of those pictures you don’t just look at but “sense” step by step. Up close, a web of drip lines, signs and pastel fields – from a few meters away, a quiet portrait suspended between dreaming and waking.
Why This Work Resonates
-
Playing with nearness and distance: step close and you see pure structure – black lines, circles, signs. Step back and you recognize the face of a young woman. The picture turns perception into an experience.
-
Calm pastels, clear rhythm: the soft ground in turquoise, mint and pink carries the black drips like a musical score. The result is a calm yet decisive rhythm on the wall – neither loud nor arbitrary.
-
Abstraction and figure at once: “Träumende Tropfen” refuses to choose between abstract painting and classical portrait. It is both – and that is exactly where its tension lies.
-
Emotion without pathos: no dramatic gaze, no overstaging – rather an inward-turned moment. The work is quiet but lasting, and accompanies a space for a long time.
Materials & Details
Acrylic on high-quality stretched canvas, built up in multiple layers. The background is made of glazed, partly overlapping fields in shades of blue, green and pink; over them run vertical black drips that hang in front of the figure like a curtain or rain. Fine red signs and circular marks set urban accents, and subtle relief structures give the work a tactile quality – a picture you can almost “feel with your eyes.”
The 4 cm deep stretcher gives the work an object-like presence on the wall, even unframed.
How to Hang It Best
-
Placement: ideal as a standalone piece on a calm wall – in a living area, a reading or retreat corner, a bedroom or guest room, but also in a practice or coaching room where reflection and conversation matter.
-
Height: the face should be roughly at or slightly above eye level, so that the shift between nearness (abstraction) and distance (figure) can be experienced intuitively.
-
Lighting: soft, even light emphasizes the pastels; a slightly directed spotlight with good color rendering (CRI ≥ 90) brings out the black lines and subtle relief effects.
-
Framing: a slim floater frame in white or natural wood is possible but not necessary – the deep stretcher carries the picture effortlessly on its own.
Curatorial Context
Rike Wölke works at the intersection of figuration, gesture and abstraction. Her handling of line and color is characteristic: faces and bodies do not appear as classical portraits but “emerge” from a lively, expressive surrounding.
“Träumende Tropfen” exemplifies this approach. The painting quotes gestural abstraction and urban-art gestures, uses drips, signs and layering – and still leads to a clearly legible figure. The work thus connects to contemporary positions that newly question the relationship between surface, perception and identity.
Within Wölke’s body of work, “Träumende Tropfen” plays a special role: the face is restrained, almost removed; the dream state is not illustrated but made formally tangible – as a balance of calm and inner movement.
Spaces & Combinations
-
Spaces:
-
private homes with calm colors and reduced furnishings
-
practices and consulting rooms that want an atmospheric but not dominant focal point
-
boutique hotels, apartments and showrooms that see contemporary art as part of their concept
-
-
Color climate:
The pastel base pairs well with light woods, neutral textiles (cream, gray, linen) and individual accents in red or coral. The black lines give the room support and structure. -
Dialogue with other works:
-
drawings or smaller abstract works in black and white as quiet partners
-
photographs with blur or reflections – to continue the theme of perception
-
an ensemble with other works by Rike Wölke in which figure and abstraction interlock

Think in Ensembles – Compact Variations
-
A triptych feel on one wall: “Träumende Tropfen” at the center, flanked by two smaller, quieter works – such as abstract works on paper with reduced lines.
-
Material contrast: the pastel acrylic painting in dialogue with a sculptural work (ceramics, glass, a small sculpture) on a sideboard below, creating vertical and horizontal sightlines.
-
Thematic focus on dream and reflection: in spaces devoted to retreat, meditation or coaching, the work can be the visual anchor – combined with a few deliberately placed objects rather than decorative clutter.
